DIY Dust Covers for home appliances (easy sewing)

Here’s a quick and easy way to make custom fit dust covers for home appliances (like printers, sewing machines, and kitchen appliances.)

Measuring & Cutting

Using a tape measure, measure A (half circumference) and B (height *2 + depth), at the largest points of the appliance. See below.

How to measure and cut fabric to make a diy dust cover.

Cut a piece of fabric (eg. calico cotton) so that its width is A+3cm and its height is B+6cm.

Sewing

Fold the fabric downwards in half, and serge along the sides. The result looks like a pillow case.

Pop the case over the appliance (with the seam down the sides), and fold the top corner down to find a good fit. Place a dot on the corner (where the pen is pointing below).

Inside out – deciding how much corner to take off

Pull the case off the appliance and lay the cover out flat on a table. Draw a square using the dot as the corner. If the distance between the dot and the two edges were different, use the smaller distance of the two and draw a square.

Cut the squares out.

Pull the two pieces of fabric apart at one corner where the dot was. Align the fabric together so it makes a straight edge, and serge along the edge.

Do the same on the other side. This makes a box shaped cover.

Pop it over the appliance again to check the sizing, and to decide how much bottom to hem up.

Still inside out – deciding on how much to hem

Fold the bottom upwards and sew a hem. I serged all around the bottom circumference then hemmed it up with a cover stitch.

Pop the finished cover on the appliance, right way out 🙂

This dark grey one covering my bread maker was made with an old jersey bedsheet. When made with stretchy knit fabric, it looks so good as it fits just right 😆✨
