How to make a Leather Wrist Strap (without rivets)

These wrist straps are great for attaching onto phone pouches and wallets – to become hands-free while walking or shopping in lieu of pockets.

Here’s an easy way to join leather strap ends together without any rivets or special tools.

What you’ll need

  • 27cm Leather strap (8mm wide)
  • 50cm Craft wire (0.8mm copper)
  • 2x Swivel Snap Hooks
  • Craft scissors for cutting

How to make

Cut ends of leather strap on a ~30degree angle. (Optional)

Insert one end of the leather strap into the eye of the hook, and fold it over 2.5cm.

Make a fold in the wire at about 7mm.

Hook it onto the leather strap so the end is inside.

Rotate the leather strap to wrap the wire around it 5 times.

Nip off the excess wire leaving about 7mm extra.

Then fold the wire end in between the folded leather straps.

One side is complete!

Repeat on the other end.

Finito!

Conclusion

It’s so handy to be able to make these wrist straps. They stay on the wrist without sliding down, and you can be hands-free while walking or shopping when lacking pockets for your phone or wallet.

After six months

I attached it to my smart phone pouch, and they haven’t fallen apart after using it for six months 😀 (The light beige leather has become darker brown from use 🤣)

Left strap: Unused // Right strap: After 6 months of usage – still intact.
