We’re too old for kyaa-our-hands-touched Shojo manga. And we’re too smart for oh-no-i-got-drunk-and-woke-up-next-to-a-man Josei manga.
We can swallow some unrealistic settings, but we want the characters to be believable and their reactions relatable.
Here’s my list of manga (not in any particular order) that I can read over and over again, because they’re well-paced and feature characters that are confident with logic.
This list focuses on romance / comedy / slice-of-life genres. I’ve kept Historical/Fantasy in another list.
On this page:
- 15 Manga with grown-up protagonists in their 20s & 30s
- 10 Manga with adults & mature teenage characters
- 6 High-school romance still enjoyable as adults
(I’m not associated with any of the Amazon links in any way; it’s just an easy way to embed imagery without copy right issues.)
15 Manga with grown-up protagonists in their twenties & thirties
Shitsuren chocolatier (失恋ショコラティエ)
Unique and engaging manga with a slightly creepy but lovable male protagonist. The gist of the story is simple, but the characters are cunning and thought provoking.
Kimi wa petto (きみはペット)
The situation seems very unrealistic, but apparently this manga started a trend of dating like this. Struggles of competent women in the office makes this an interesting read.
Liar x Liar(ライアーxライアー)
This one is so funny. What’s refreshing is that the main character is not dumb at all – she can read men’s signs and read between the lines as much as we can – so there’s never that ‘duh, what did you think would happen’ moment.
Tokyo tarareba musume (東京タラレバ娘)
Great tempo. And so true. The somewhat-lame plot is not what you read this for; it’s the conversations between the 3 women in their early 30s that makes this a super fun read.
Dame na watashi ni koi shite kudasai (ダメな私に恋してください)
The fast-paced conversations between 29yo Michiko and her old/new boss is just hilarious. A fun, easy read.
Bread & Butter (ブレッド&バター)
While other manga on this list are fast-paced and on the loud side, this is a calm slice-of-life romance manga featuring a 34 and 39yo.
Uchyu kyodai (宇宙兄弟)
Life doesn’t work out as expected but Mutta, 31, finally decides to follow his childhood dream. It’s funny, relatable, and an inspirational read especially during a mid-life (a-third-life) crisis.
Nigeru wa haji daga yakuni tatsu (逃げるは恥だが役に立つ)
While this is about treating marriage like an occupation, discussions between the characters about how the world should be like is pretty interesting.
Gozen sanji no muhou chitai (午前3時の無法地帯)
I do hear this is what it’s like to work as a designer in Japan… Good thing I’m not one 😀
Koudaike no hitobito (高台家の人々)
The only manga that made me laugh out loud. The story flickers between the mind-reading family members rather than focus on a single couple, but it’s definitely in my permanent library.
Hinako-san no wake ari na hibi (日奈子さんの理由アリな日々)
36 year old Hinako is actually a grandmother. While she doesn’t act like she’s in her 30s and her popularity with men makes this manga a bit of a lalaland, it’s surprisingly not frustrating, but pleasant, to read.
Anatano koto wa sorehodo (あなたのことはそれほど)
While reading this doesn’t make you feel good, because it’s about an affair and slightly crazy people, it’s written really well and hard to put down.
Shunka shuutou days (春夏秋冬Days)
Another story that evolves around 3 girls around their 30s, but this time they’re married, divorced, and de-facto. It contains emotional cheating and some bitchiness, but it’s a peaceful read.
Harekon (ハレ婚)
Though the cover doesn’t show it, the drawings are insanely beautiful. I’m not entirely sure if this is targeted at men or women, but if you have an open mind you’ll enjoy this strange marriage story.
Nana (ナナ)
None of the characters are exactly lovable, but there’s a lot in this manga that can make you love it. It’s full of drama and emotions without getting too ugly; the whole world is probably waiting quietly for it to resume.
10 Manga with adults & mature teenage characters
Nanatsuya Shinobu no Housekibako (七つ屋志のぶの宝石匣)
Written by Ninomiya who made Nodame Cantabile. This is an easy and pleasant read (the main character isn’t silly like Nodame), and keeps me engaged as the main story is still a mystery 17 volumes in. It features a lot of gem stones, but it doesn’t harp on too much; just enough to get me wondering if I want a ring 😀
Kanojo wa uso wo aishi sugiteru (カノジョは嘘を愛しすぎてる)
This keeps pressing on the borderline of frustrating, but stays engaging. I need to read this again.
Koi to ai (恋と愛)
This author is great at writing about heavy themes (in this case, drugs, violence, and mental disorders) in a light-hearted way. Even selfish men are rendered loving in her works.
Honey bitter (ハニービター)
BOYS Esthe (BOYSエステ)
All the characters are lovable despite the slightly unrealistic but believable setting. Because the focus is outside of school it’s nice to read as an adult.
Handsome na kanojo (ハンサムな彼女)
Dengeki daisy (電撃デイジー)
Mayonaka no ariadone (真夜中のアリアドネ)
P to JK (PとJK)
Kimi ga uso wo tsuita (君がウソをついた)
6 High-school romance still enjoyable as adults
Some of these are because the characters are logical thinkers. Others might be because of my nostalgia; but they’re pleasant reads even now because they’re well paced.
3D Kanojo real girl (3D彼女リアルガール)
Kodomo no omocha (こどものおもちゃ)
Haru matsu bokura (春待つ僕ら)
Omoi, omoware, furi, furare (思い、思われ、ふり、ふられ)
Muteki no venus (無敵のヴィーナス)
Marmalade boy (ママレード・ボーイ)
Was your favourite in here? Did you find a new fave? What manga can you read over and over as grown-up?
