I was after a comfy, all-season dress—something I could throw on for travel, work, or a quick run to the shops. Easy to layer under a jacket or wear on its own. An “everything dress.”

I’ve drafted my own simple yoke dress patterns in the past, but this time I decided to give Babylock’s summer yoke dress pattern a try—with a few small tweaks to make it suit my style better.
What I changed

Yoke & Sleeves: I used the same fabric for the yoke as the rest of the dress, skipped the puffy sleeves, and finished the armholes with a 2.5cm ribbing. (I originally left them sleeveless to test the look—turned out great! So I finished it with narrow ribbing – could also finish it with a 4-ply knit binder.)
Length & Fit: Made it midi length by extending the bottom skirt panel to 100cm (including seam allowance). It was the perfect length without hemming, so next time I might add 3–5cm for flexibility.
Gathers: Added gathering to both the front and back—each 80cm wide, since I was working with 160cm-wide fabric.
Pockets: Added two side seam pockets, the seam placed 42cm from the top. (Might try 40cm next time so the pocket starts at about 45cm for slightly better placement.)
Neckline: Bound the collar with 4-ply knit binding, no pattern adjustments needed. It sat really well.
Hem detail: Thought about adding a gathered hem for a little extra flair when worn loose, but with a waist ribbon, it didn’t feel necessary. Still toying with the idea of a ruffle hem just to extend the overall length a bit.
Fabric
I used a sports poly knit fabric with a soft cotton backing—with the cotton side out for a modest look.
Result
I love how it turned out! It drapes beautifully with a waist ribbon and feels effortless to wear.

The neckline finish is clean and professional looking too.

Then, finally, I managed to use the 4-ply knit binder to make a 150cm piece of matching ribbon. (It was the first time I got the chain stitch to work all the way with the knit binder!)

I love it! But, there’s a couple of things I wanted to try.
So, Take 2
I re-made this dress with black cotton jersey fabric, with the following changes:
- Below Yoke: 90cm wide, 110cm long – gathered at front, reverse box pleat at back
- Pockets: Top seam at 37cm from top (21cm below yoke seam)
- Ribbon: Two 100cm tie ribbon sewn in at 11cm below the armpit seam
- Sleeves: 2cm ribbing for sleeves (cut 6cm wide)
- Hem: Hemmed up 6cm resulting in ~114cm dress

It’s longer, has a fuller gather, and the pockets are at a great height. Perfect everything dress 🙂

Just one thing; the jersey fabric tends to cling onto itself when I walk in it, so this dress shall be remade with better fabric.
