Making a Slouchy Beanie from a Knit Top

I bought this knit top almost 15 years ago. It’s started to have permanent stains and become tight around the underarms. So I decided to refashion it into a nice lightweight beanie!

(The hem was already reused to extend my ribbed cropped t-shirt.)

Aiming for a 58cm circumference beanie, the knit top was cut approx 30cmx2 wide, and 32cm tall to make it slouchy. The top 10cm was turned into two semicircles.

I decided to use my normal sewing machine (not my babylock overlocker) to keep the edges soft, so I wouldn’t feel the overlocker threads when wearing as there would be no lining.

Referencing Bu-kirin and Oharico, the basic steps for making this quick beanie were:

  1. Sew the ends together so it becomes a tube.
  2. Sew adjacent semicircle quadrants together.
  3. Fold and sew the ‘hem’.

When finished, the circumference was too big, so I added 10cm of 6mm-wide elastic at the back of the beanie. Stretching the elastic to its max while sewing it on.

With the elastic at the back, it hugs my head better and feels super comfy!
