My next subject for sumi-e painting is Hasu no Hana (Lotus). Let me pull together great lotus ink-wash paintings from various socials for inspiration.

This probably includes realistic paintings too.

The seed pods reminded me of Renkon (lotus roots).
Mmm… lotus root chips & kinpira…
Why is the lotus a popular subject in ink wash paintings?
Lotuses grow in mud but bloom into clean flowers, symbolising the journey to enlightenment despite life’s challenges. The Buddha is often shown sitting on a lotus.
They also form beautiful flowers. The simplicity and expressiveness of ink wash painting make it a perfect way to capture the symbolic meanings and beauty of lotus flowers.
Is there something more modern-wow about lotuses?
Apparently the leaves are awesome at self-cleaning. They have waxed surfaces that washes dirt away when it rains, preventing growth of micro-orgasms.
It’s called the “lotus effect”, and it’s been applied to building surfaces, textiles, and equipment!
