Making a Twisted Summer Snood

I decided to upcycle my cotton gauze shorts into a summer snood.

These pair of shorts I made a while ago are super soft, but it’s colour blocked because I didn’t have enough fabric of any of the colours 🤣 It’s cute, but I’m a bit old for it now. So I decided to cut it apart and make a soft summer snood out of it. It’s double gauze cotton, so it’ll be perfect!

Materials

These were soft double gauze cotton fabric, great for sun protection in summer.

• Navy – 70 x 25cm
• Sage – 70 x 25cm

I sewed together two 36x25cm fabric panels from the shorts to make it 70cm long. 70cm (including seam allowance) allowed me to pull the completed snood over my head.

Steps (Reference video)

I initially made it twisted by 180 degrees, but later pulled it apart to rotate it 360 degrees.

The gist is to:

1. Sew the long sides together to form a long tube.
2. While it’s inside out, pull one end inside through the tube and align.
3. Rotate the inside edge and sew the edges almost closed.
4. Pull it right way out, and close the seam.

Conclusion

Upcycling those cotton gauze shorts into a summer snood turned out even better than I expected. The fabric is soft and breezy, perfect for keeping the sun off on hot days, and the navy and sage panels give it a playful, one-of-a-kind vibe. It feels great knowing I’ve turned something I didn’t really love into a piece I’ll actually enjoy wearing in summer.
