Last year, I made a pink tiered skirt with my puppy out of a flannelette bed sheet from Big W, which I love. This year, they sold flannelette bed sheets in my favourite colour – blue.
So I decided to make another skirt with just one difference; it’s a bit less frilly so the floral pattern can be seen better when worn.

Sewing pattern
Here’s the pattern for the new blue tiered skirt. Compared to the pink one, the hem is 40cm less wide in total circumference, but it still maintains the x1.5 ratio from row to row.
The reason I decided to make it slightly less frilly this time is because this fabric is pretty heavy and the floral pattern gets hidden away in between the gathers when there’s too much volume.

I helped.

How to make
The steps to making this was exactly the same as my previous post below. In fact, I followed it myself since I forgot some of the details!
Here’s an overview of the steps covered in the above post:
Gather the top of the bottom tier so the width matches the middle tier.
(Babylock overlocker was used to serge the edge with the settings: D2, L4, W6.5.)

Serge the bottom and middle tiers together.
(Babylock overlocker was used to serge the edge with the settings: D0, L3.5, W7.5.)

Fold the serged edge upwards and lock-stitch along the serge to secure the gather down flat.

Repeat to connect the middle and top tiers of the skirt.

Do the same to make the back of the skirt.

Gather the top of the skirt panels so they become about 50cm wide each.

Tie the threads on each side of the gather so the top of the skirt stays 50cm wide.
Add pockets to the front skirt (see how).

Serge to connect the front and the back skirt panels.
Sew the elastic waist band into a loop.

Divvy up the skirt and elastic into eighths and clip them together.
Lock-stitch them together, wrong way facing eachother and elastic peeking about 5mm outwards.

Turn the elastic right way out, and lock-stitch along the bottom of the elastic to secure it flat along the skirt circumference.

Complete!
Here’s the finished 3-tier gathered skirt with an elastic waist band, big pockets, and rolled edge hem – made from a flannelette bed sheet!

The blue skirt with less volume looks less bunched up than the pink one when standing straight, and the floral pattern shows up better. I love them both though 😊

They’re my go-to skirts even in winter because I can wear warm trakkie pants underneath (like I am in the blue skirt photo). Also, the pockets feel so secure, because the fabric is pretty sturdy; I feel nothing when I drop my smart phone inside!
