🥈 Freshly made Japanese sweets at Tsuruya Yoshinobu, Tokyo

At Tsuruya Yoshinobu’s Tokyo Mise shop, a Japanese sweets artisan makes traditional sweets right in front of you to have with Matcha tea.

Located in COREDO Muromachi in Nihonbashi (a fun shopping centre worth a visit), this elegant confectionery café offers a rare experience: you sit at a sleek counter, much like in a sushi bar, and watch a skilled wagashi artisan craft seasonal sweets right in front of you.

The sweets, known as namagashi, are made fresh to order. You’ll see delicate bean pastes shaped into flowers, leaves, or seasonal motifs using wooden spatulas and traditional tools. It’s mesmerizing to watch—and even better to taste.

These sweets are made moments before you eat them. Pre-packaged ones made on the day sold at specialist stores are nice, but these are on a whole new level.

The menu changes with the seasons. You might get a hydrangea-shaped kinton in summer or a chrysanthemum in autumn. Each piece is a tiny edible work of art – and they are made very fast so that their hands don’t warm it up.

The freshly made sweet is served with a bowl of matcha, creating a perfect balance of earthy bitterness and subtle sweetness.

Getting there

Open most days (except new years day) from late morning until 8pmy this place is about a 2min walk from Mitsukoshimae Station in Tokyo.

If in Tokyo, I would make a small detour to pop in for a tasty treat, so it’s a 🥈 (=worth a detour) on #myrevisitlist.
